How To File A Tax Extension Form

Tax Extension Deadline Approaching: File by April 18th

Automatic Extensions Available for Taxpayers in Disaster Areas

File by Mail, Online, or Through TurboTax

Taxpayers who are unable to file their federal tax return by the April 18, 2023, deadline can request an extension. An extension grants taxpayers until October 16, 2023, to file their returns.

To request an extension, taxpayers must complete Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File US Individual Income Tax Return. This form can be mailed to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or e-filed using TurboTax account.

Taxpayers in certain disaster areas may be eligible for an automatic extension without filing Form 4868. To determine if you are located in a disaster area, visit the IRS website.

Filing an extension grants taxpayers additional time to file their returns but does not extend the deadline for tax payments. Any taxes owed must be paid by the original due date.

Key Points:

  • File for an extension by April 18, 2023.
  • Use Form 4868 to request an extension.
  • E-file or mail the extension request.
  • Disaster area residents may be eligible for automatic extensions.
  • Tax payments are still due by the original deadline.
