The Shining and Nashville Star Shelley Duvall Dies at 75

A Versatile Actress Who Faced Personal Demons

Shelley Alexis Duvall, born on July 7, 1949, in Fort Worth, Texas, grew up around Houston. Her father, Robert, was a cattle auctioneer turned tax attorney, while her mother, Bobbie Ruth Crawford, was a school teacher. Duvall attended Lamar High School in Houston and later studied acting at the University of North Texas.

Duvall's breakthrough role came in 1970 when she was cast as Millie Dobie in Robert Altman's McCabe & Mrs. Miller. Her performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination and established her as a rising star. She went on to appear in several other Altman films, including Brewster McCloud (1970), The Long Goodbye (1973), Nashville (1975), and California Split (1974).

In 1980, Duvall starred in one of her most famous roles, that of Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. Her performance as the terrorized wife of Jack Nicholson's character is considered one of the most iconic in horror cinema. However, the film also took a toll on Duvall's mental health, leading her to struggle with anxiety and depression for years to come.

Duvall continued to act throughout the 1980s and 1990s, but her career was often overshadowed by her personal struggles. She made a brief comeback in the late 2000s, appearing in the documentary The Shining Girls (2012) and the horror film We Are Still Here (2015).

Duvall's death was confirmed by her agent. No cause of death has been released.
