Dan Hurley Declines Lakers Offer, Remains at UConn

UConn Head Coach Turns Down Potential NBA Career

Hurley Cited Strong Ties to University and Team

Storrs, Conn. - UConn men's basketball head coach Dan Hurley has declined a six-year, $70 million contract offer from the Los Angeles Lakers, choosing to remain at the university. The decision ends speculation about Hurley's future after leading the Huskies to their second NCAA Tournament Championship in four years.

Hurley, who has been at UConn since 2018, said in a statement that he is "incredibly grateful" for the Lakers' offer but that he is "committed to UConn and our student-athletes." He added that he believes the Huskies have the potential to "continue to compete for championships."

UConn Athletic Director David Benedict praised Hurley's decision, calling him "a great leader and an even better person." He said that Hurley's commitment to the university is "a testament to the special culture he has built here."

The Lakers have been seeking a new head coach since parting ways with Frank Vogel in April. Hurley was reportedly one of the top candidates for the job, but he ultimately decided to stay with UConn.
