Car Inspection Laws for Antique Vehicles

Virginia

According to VA statutes, if you own a vehicle over 25 years old from the preceding January 1 of a calendar year, you are exempt from annual safety inspections.

Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) does not require safety inspections for antique vehicles that are at least 25 years old and have a valid classic or antique vehicle registration.

Texas

Antique cars in Texas do not require annual safety inspections if they are over 25 years old. However, vehicles that are less than 25 years old must pass a safety inspection before they can be registered as antique vehicles.

General Inspection Checklist for Classic Cars

When inspecting a classic car:

  • Examine the condition of the vehicle's body and chassis for signs of rust, dents, or other damage.
  • Check the tires for wear and tear, and make sure the wheels are aligned.
  • Inspect the brakes, headlights, taillights, and turn signals to ensure they are functioning properly.
  • Test the engine, transmission, and other mechanical components to make sure they are running smoothly.

By following these guidelines, you can help ensure that your antique vehicle is safe and roadworthy.
